On 20th of May around 3 in the afternoon , Super Cyclone Amphan made landfall of the coastal region of Bengal and Orissa. It is the strongest tropical cyclone to hit Ganges Delta since Sidr of 2007 and first Super cyclonic storm to occur over bay of Bengal since 1999.

Amphan originated on 13th May from a low pressure area in couple of hundreds mile over the coast of Colombo,Srilanka. Tracking over North eastwards,the disturbance organized over exceptionally warm sea surface temperature.

On 18th may , Amphan reached its peak intensity of winds clocking over 250 km/h. Finally on 20th May , Amphan made landfall with sustained wind speed of over 150 km/h.

Cyclone made contact with the city of Kolkata around 5 in the evening, battering the metropolis with heavy rain and wind speed over 150 km/h. When the carnage was over , the cyclone claimed over 15 lives in the city and over 100 in total along the eastern states of India and Bangladesh.  

With cases of COVID-19 on the rise , AMPHAN was just the pile on the city needed at this time of the hour, putting stress on states already overburdened health care and disaster management system. With uncountable uprooted trees and powerlines, almost half of the affected districts of Bengal lies in dark. With no fresh water to drink and electricity or mobile connectivity to get in touch with emergency services, the peoples stood in disarray amidst the calamity in the pandemic of COVID.

At the end cyclone AMPHAN caused estimated damages of over 10 billion USD. With farmlands and houses been washed away by seawater , the citizens of Bengal worries for harder days ahead amidst the pandemic lockdown.

The central government has announced a immediate relief package of 140 million USD to combat the aftermath of the Super Cyclone.
